Transition Information for Educators
In the state of Texas, transition services must be in place for all students with special education services when they turn 14 or before, as necessary.
Transition Assessments
Every student with special education services at RMA should complete a transition assessment each year in preparation for their annual ARD meeting. These assessments are vital in helping students identify their post-secondary goals and ensuring they align with their strengths, needs, interests and preferences.
Post-Secondary Goals
Every student with special education services at RMA will have post-secondary goals in the areas of Employment, Education, and, for many, Independent Living. These goals are developed along with the student. While these goals may stay the same from year to year, they should be considered and reviewed at every annual ARD meeting.
Course of Study
Every student with special education services at RMA will have a course of study included in their annual ARD meetings. This course of study details each of the recommended courses that a student will need to take to earn their credits for graduation, term by term, through graduation. It is important to emphasize courses that support movement towards the student’s post-secondary goals.
Coordinated Set of Activities
Every student with special education services at RMA will have a detailed record of the services required while at RMA for a student to complete their graduation plan and to support movement towards their post-secondary goals. These services include, but are not limited to, accommodations, modifications, instructional support, and related services while at RMA.
Transfer of Rights
At each annual ARD for students under the age of 18 at RMA, the parents and student will be notified of the transfer of rights at age 18. Information on guardianship, power of attorney, and supported decision-making is available for parents of students with significant disabilities.
At age 18, RMA provides information to the student and parent(s), in writing that, when a child with a disability reaches the age of majority (18) under State law (except for a child with a disability who has been determined to be incompetent under State law), all rights transfer to the adult student.
Meaning that, at age 18, a student is considered an adult, and all rights are transferred to that student. When a student reaches the age of majority (18), they are regarded as being able to make their own choices. This would include making choices about their education in the ARD meetings.
